London, April 24, 2022 (AFP) - Barnsley manager Poya Asbaghi left the Championship club by mutual consent on Sunday in the immediate aftermath of their relegation to League One.

Asbaghi and his assistant Ferran Sibila departed Oakwell 48 hours after Barnsley's three-year spell in the second tier ended with a 2-1 defeat against Huddersfield on Friday.

The Swede was appointed in November but was unable to save Barnsley from the drop.

Barnsley's academy coach Martin Devaney will take over for the rest of the season.

"I want to thank everybody at Oakwell for their time and efforts over the last months, this of course includes players, fans and staff," Asbaghi said.

Barnsley chief executive Khaled El-Ahmad added: "On behalf of Barnsley Football Club, I would like to thank both Poya and Ferran for their hard work and professionalism during a difficult time.

"Our search for a new coach has already started and an announcement will follow once that process is concluded."
