Anthony Gordon swapped a relegation battle for a place among England's elite.

The winger joined Premier League highfliers Newcastle United from Everton on Sunday for a reported £40-million fee that could rise to £45 million after add-ons. Gordon was with the Toffees since he was 11 and made his professional debut with the club aged 16 in the Europa League.

However, his relationship with his hometown club disintegrated while fans questioned his commitment - some supporters surrounded his car after a recent defeat to Southampton and demanded his exit - and he missed training sessions before signing a long-term contract with the Magpies.

Gordon's driven performances had earned him a cult following at Goodison Park, but he couldn't maintain his excellent form this season as he scored three goals over 16 Premier League appearances. The 21-year-old's asking price dipped after Everton reportedly snubbed any offers below £60 million for him last summer amid links with free-spending Chelsea.

Gordon mostly featured on the right wing this term - a position regularly occupied by Miguel Almiron in Eddie Howe's side - but also appeared on the left flank and up front for Everton. He's represented England Under-21s since November 2021.

"I feel like it's a really big step," Gordon said of his transfer. "People haven't seen what I'm capable of yet. I think under the gaffer, and the way the club's going, I can really excel here."

The attacker could make his Newcastle debut against West Ham United on Saturday.
