Benjamin Mendy can't catch a break.

Manchester City confirmed Wednesday that the French full-back underwent surgery on his left knee after withdrawing from contention for a pair of upcoming internationals.

"The 24-year-old defender attended Dr. (Ramon) Cugat's clinic in Barcelona where scans revealed that surgery was required," City's statement read. The club did not provide a timetable for his return.

Mendy has experienced an injury-riddled spell with the Premier League holders since making the £51.75-million move from Monaco last summer. A pair of thigh problems and a cruciate ligament rupture limited the affable Le Havre academy product to seven Premier League appearances in his first season at the Etihad.

Mendy won a race for fitness to make Didier Deschamps' 23-man France squad but lost out to Lucas Hernandez for first-choice duties with the World Cup winners. This season, the social-media savant has featured in nine league affairs, including last weekend's pivotal 3-1 Manchester derby victory.
