Report: Bayern to hire Burnley's Kompany as coach

Bayern Munich hope to hire Vincent Kompany as their new head coach within the next few days after a compensation package was discussed with Burnley, The Telegraph's Mike McGrath reports.

The 38-year-old is under contract with the Clarets until 2028 and was expected to remain in charge of the club despite its relegation from the Premier League. However, he emerged as a surprise contender to replace Thomas Tuchel in Munich over the past few days.

Tuchel and Bayern initially agreed to part ways in February. The coach said last Friday that the German giants tried to convince him to stay near the end of the season but he and the club couldn't agree to terms.

Kompany's managerial reputation soared when he moved from Anderlecht to Burnley in 2022, swiftly turned the conservative Clarets into a lively attacking team, and steamrolled opponents en route to promotion from the Championship. But Burnley suffered another Premier League relegation with just five wins and 24 points after Kompany tried to stick with a similar playing style against superior teams.

Kompany has an enviable collection of medals from his playing days, winning four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and four League Cups with Manchester City. He also won two league titles in Belgium with Anderlecht and hoisted the now-defunct Intertoto Cup while playing for Hamburg in Germany.

Burnley to Bayern represents a huge step up for Kompany - both in the clubs' reputations and expectations. The Bavarians are reeling after they finished third, 18 points behind champions Bayer Leverkusen, to end their run of 11 straight Bundesliga titles this season. Their failure to collect silverware in the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, DFB-Supercup, and Champions League marks the club's first trophyless campaign since 2012.

Kompany is expected to take his backroom team with him from Turf Moor to the Allianz Arena, McGrath reports. His staff includes assistant Craig Bellamy and first-team coaches Piet Cremers, Mike Jackson, and Floribert N'Galula.
