Martin Schmidt resigned from his position as VfL Wolfsburg manager on Monday following a run of four matches without victory.
The Swiss' final act as boss was to be on the verge of a commendable draw against runaway leader Bayern Munich, until Robert Lewandowski netted a 91st-minute penalty. Wolfsburg was ahead earlier in the tie via a Daniel Didavi header.
"We lost the game in the offensive today, because we never really caused a threat and gave away the ball far too easily. That's a real shame, because we had a set plan for where the ball should go," Schmidt reflected after the gut-wrenching 2-1 defeat.
He added: "Ultimately, we could not withstand the pressure and our energy levels began to drain. That's how the game eventually got away from us - it was too little to earn a win."
Schmidt had a difficult task at Wolfsburg. The club was in disarray when he arrived, and his resignation raises further questions about the power of Olaf Rebbe in the post of sporting director.
Fourteenth-placed Wolfsburg travels on Friday to Mainz, another side trying to fight off relegation from the Bundesliga.
