The Saskatchewan Roughriders signed quarterback Trevor Harris to a two-year contract, the team announced Tuesday.

The 36-year-old passed for 4,157 yards and 20 touchdowns to 12 interceptions after assuming the starting job in Week 3 last season. He helped lead the Montreal Alouettes to a 9-9 record and second-place finish in the East Division, but they ultimately fell in the East Division final to the eventual Grey Cup Champions Toronto Argonauts.

Harris will likely be a leading candidate for the Roughriders' starting job after Cody Fajardo signed with Montreal at the start of free agency.

The 6-foot-3, 212-pound signal-caller has racked up 28,610 passing yards, 154 touchdowns, and 71 interceptions over 11 seasons. After beginning his CFL tenure with the Argonauts, he's gone on to have stints with the Ottawa Redblacks, Edmonton Elks, and the Alouettes.

Montreal felt confident that Harris could re-sign with the club last month at winter meetings, but the franchise's unstable ownership situation could have been a factor in the veteran's departure.

Harris hasn't been Montreal's lone significant departure since the start of free agency. Star wideout Eugene Lewis had signed a lucrative deal with the Elks earlier on Tuesday.
