Report: Haney-Prograis to fight for WBC junior welterweight belt Oct. 28
Undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney will be moving up a weight class to fight Regis Prograis for Prograis' WBC junior welterweight title Oct. 28 in Las Vegas, sources told ESPN's Mike Coppinger.
Haney decided to move up to 140 pounds and face Prograis instead of arranging a fight against the WBC's mandatory lightweight challenger Shakur Stevenson.
The 24-year-old is planning to petition the WBC for permission to retain his 135-pound title - and thereby keep his status as the undisputed lightweight champion - even though he's moving up, sources told BoxingScene's Jake Donovan earlier Friday. Stevenson's team plans to ask that Haney's belt be declared vacant, Donovan reports.
Haney is a lifetime 30-0, with 15 of those wins coming via knockout. The San Francisco native's most recent fight this past May ended in a unanimous victory over Vasiliy Lomachenko, marking his second successful defense of his undisputed lightweight titles. The Prograis fight will mark his first time fighting in a different weight class.
Prograis, 34, will head into this fight sporting a 29-1 record with 24 KOs. He first claimed the WBC junior welterweight title with an 11th-round knockout of Jose Zepeda last November, then defended it with a split-decision victory over Danielito Zorrilla on June 17.
