Kyrgios slams Djokovic's 'boneheaded' tour after positive COVID-19 tests

Nick Kyrgios has called it a "boneheaded decision" to go ahead with the Adria Tour, a series of exhibition events organized by Novak Djokovic, after Grigor Dimitrov and Borna Coric both tested positive for the coronavirus.

World No. 19 Dimitrov withdrew from the Adria Tour on Saturday following defeat to Coric in Zadar, Croatia. Coric played again in his homeland the following day despite players coming into close contact at the tournament.

"Boneheaded decision to go ahead with the 'exhibition,'" Kyrgios tweeted on Monday. "Speedy recovery fellas, but that's what happens when you disregard all protocols. This is not a joke."

Due to the loosening of COVID-19 guidelines in Croatia, players weren't obliged to observe social distancing rules. As a result, Djokovic also competed in an exhibition basketball game on Thursday where he was pictured with Dimitrov, Coric, Alexander Zverev, and Marin Cilic.

Djokovic's agent confirmed on Monday that his client was yet to undergo a COVID-19 test but said he would receive one, according to BBC Sport. The world No. 1 was set to play Andrey Rublev in Sunday's canceled final.

"Congratulations. Such leadership," Kyrgios offered when the tour's main event was scrapped and accompanied his message with a facepalm emoji.

The Adria Tour's matches have also been supported by full crowds since they began this month, with 4,000 attending the first event in Serbia alone. Djokovic defended staging the events last week, saying, "The situation is really, really different maybe in America or the U.K. than it is in Serbia or surrounding countries."

There have been no professional tennis events organized by the women's and men's tours since March due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The US Open will be staged without fans from Aug. 31, while the president of the French tennis federation, Bernard Giudicelli, has insisted the French Open will "absolutely" allow spectators when it begins on Sept. 27.
