World No. 2 Elena Rybakina suffered a shocking upset loss to Yuliia Starodubtseva in the second round of the French Open on Wednesday.

Rybakina looked to be in control after cruising to a 6-3 win in the first set, but Starodubtseva dominated the second set and completed the stunning victory with a 10-4 win in the third-set tiebreaker.

Rybakina, the reigning Australian Open champion, was considered a top favorite at Roland Garros and entered the tournament in scintillating form after winning the Stuttgart Open in April.

This is the first time Rybakina has failed to advance to at least the third round at Roland Garros in six years.

The World No. 2, who also has a Wimbledon title to her name, is yet to win the French Open. Her best run came in 2021 when she lost to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the quarterfinals.

Starodubtseva, ranked No. 55, had never triumphed over a top-10 opponent before Wednesday's victory.

"I'm super happy. Elena is one of the top players. She's had an incredible year," Starodubtseva said in her on-court interview, according to WTAtennis.com. "I'm super proud of myself that I was able to do this today. It was a hard third set, but I got it done."

The Ukrainian is set to face Chinese qualifier Wang Xiyu in the third round.
