Venus Williams was knocked out of the US Open on Tuesday after losing to Karolina Muchova in the opening round of the Grand Slam event.

Muchova, ranked 20th in the world, booked her spot in the second round, beating the two-time US Open champion 6-3, 7-5 at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Williams, 40, had opportunities in the first set but couldn't convert in the convincing loss. She bounced back with an encouraging start in the second frame, but momentum shifted in Muchova's favor as the world No. 20 closed out a record straight-sets victory.

It's the 10-time Grand Slam champion's first elimination in the first round of the US Open after 22 appearances.

Muchova will take on Russia's Anna Kalinskaya in the next round.

Williams' sister, Serena, began her quest for a 24th Grand Slam title with a dominant first-round victory, setting a US Open record with her 102nd win.
