Spain midfielder Fermin Lopez is set to miss this summer's World Cup after his club Barcelona diagnosed him with a foot fracture on Monday which requires surgery.
The 23-year-old would likely have been called up by Spain coach Luis de la Fuente for the tournament this summer in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Fermin suffered the injury during Spanish champions Barcelona's 3-1 win over Real Betis on Sunday in La Liga.
"First-team player Fermin Lopez suffered a fracture in the fifth metatarsal of his right foot during yesterday's match. The player will undergo surgical treatment," said Barcelona in a statement.
Lopez has become a regular for Barcelona over the past two seasons and has seven Spain caps.
