Gareth Southgate may have to consider his long-term future as manager of England in the near future, as the Football Association is planning to offer the 47-year-old a new deal.

"We'd like him to stay beyond 2020 (when Southgate's current deal expires), and I think he would like that too, but we haven't spoken about it in any depth because that would be a contract discussion and he's on holiday now, so we'll talk about that when he gets back," FA chief executive Martin Glenn told Martha Kelner of the Guardian.

Convincing Southgate to extend his current contract could prove to be a challenge, however, considering the temptation of a possible move to the Premier League given his success at the World Cup last month in Russia.

"It's our job to make it competitive, to make sure him and all of our people are competitively rewarded," Glenn continued. "We can never compete with a Premier League club in terms of pay."

Under Southgate, who took charge in 2016, England won its first-ever shootout at a World Cup before reaching the semifinal round for the first time in 28 years. England ultimately finished fourth after falling to Belgium in the third-place match.

Glenn added that Southgate fits the mold of what the FA is looking for, and cited the former England international's preparation as a primary reason for the country's unexpected success at the World Cup.

"He's really blossomed," Glenn said. "It was fantastic seeing him firsthand in pressure situations. He fits the definition of the modern manager we want. He gets that it’s not just picking the team but all the aspects behind it and has benefited from a world-class support team. I’m sure he'd be the first to say that."
