Former Los Angeles Sparks star Liz Cambage will take an indefinite absence from the WNBA, she announced on Instagram on Monday.
Cambage terminated her contract with the Sparks in late July for undisclosed reasons. The four-time All-Star was in the middle of her first campaign in Los Angeles.
"Playing for the Sparks was a dream come true, and I'm honored to have shared the court with such amazing ladies for as long as we did," Cambage said. "I'm sorry to have left abruptly, and I wish it would have ended on a different note.
"I've decided to step away from the league for the time being, and I'm hopeful that the WNBA will do their part in creating safer environments and a stronger support system for their players."
Cambage has had an on-and-off relationship with the league since being drafted with the No. 2 pick in 2011 by the Tulsa Shock. She played with the franchise in her rookie season and again in 2013 before taking a hiatus until 2018. She then played one season with the Dallas Wings and two with the Las Vegas Aces prior to joining the Sparks.
All told, Cambage has career averages of 15.8 points and 7.5 rebounds per game across 167 contests.
