Washington Mystics head coach Mike Thibault entered the WNBA's health and safety protocols and will miss the team's final two regular-season games, the Mystics announced Wednesday.

Thibault is fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and will return to the sidelines once cleared. Associate head coach Eric Thibault will fill his father's role versus the New York Liberty on Friday and the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday.

Thibault's setback comes with Washington already weathering the absence of two-time league MVP Elena Delle Donne. The remainder of the 32-year-old's season is in jeopardy due to nerve pain stemming from back surgery.

The Mystics are currently 12-18 (.400) and maintain a weak grip on the eighth and final playoff berth. The Liberty and Los Angeles Sparks are both 11-19 (.367) with two games to play, setting up a dramatic conclusion to the regular season.
