Bracket set for women's soccer: USWNT, Canada could meet in semis

The road to gold is set in Tokyo.

The eight quarterfinalists in the women's soccer tournament were confirmed after the final slate of group matches on Tuesday, with the perennial powers all keeping their medal hopes alive by reaching the knockout stages.

The United States and Canada, held to draws in their group finales by Australia and Great Britain, respectively, could clash in the semifinals in a potential repeat of their epic encounter from 2012.

To get there, though, the USWNT will first need to eliminate Vivianne Miedema and the Netherlands in the quarters; that match itself is an encore from the 2019 World Cup final, which the Americans won, 2-0.

Canada, meanwhile, has a date with Brazil in the last eight.

Great Britain and Sweden, winners of their groups, are on the other side of the bracket which, on paper, appears to be slightly more forgiving. They'll meet Australia and host nation Japan, respectively, in the next round.

All four matches are scheduled for Friday.
