MLS quarterfinal matchups set after Portland books last berth
The MLS is Back Tournament is down to eight teams after the Portland Timbers and Minnesota United claimed the last two spots in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
The Timbers brought the round of 16 to an end after beating a stubborn FC Cincinnati team in a shootout. Giovanni Savarese's men will take on New York City FC in the next round.
A date with the San Jose Earthquakes awaits Minnesota United in the quarterfinals, as the Loons also beat the Columbus Crew in a shootout on Tuesday. After blowing the lead in the 77th minute, Minnesota eventually booked their spot thanks to a perfect performance from the penalty spot.
Here's the schedule for the next phase of the competition, which begins Thursday (all times ET):
- July 30: Philadelphia Union vs. Sporting KC (8 p.m.)
- July 31: Orlando City vs. Los Angeles FC (7:30 p.m.)
- Aug. 1: Minnesota United vs. San Jose Earthquakes (8 p.m.)
- Aug. 1: New York City FC vs. Portland Timbers (11 p.m.)
The final is scheduled for Aug. 11 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
