The New York Red Bulls timed their news dump to perfection on Friday.

Just 10 minutes after the start of the first World Cup quarter-final, the MLS outfit announced head coach Jesse Marsch has left his role and will be replaced by assistant Chris Armas.

According to MLSsoccer.com's Sam Stejskal, Marsch is "in deep discussions" to take up an as-yet-unspecified role with sister club RB Leipzig in the German Bundesliga.

Marsch had been in charge at Red Bull Arena for three-and-a-half seasons and is arguably the most successful coach in the club's history, having led New York to the 2015 MLS Supporters Shield, the U.S. Open Cup final in 2017, and two qualifications for the CONCACAF Champions League.

Armas, a former Chicago Fire and U.S. national team player, has been an assistant at the Red Bulls since 2015. He takes charge with the club sitting pretty in second in the Eastern Conference.

His first game in the hot seat will be another chapter in the fierce local derby against New York City FC.
