The Netherlands will square off against Portugal in the inaugural Nations League final after emerging from Thursday's hotly contested semifinal with a 3-1 victory over England.

England's bid to advance fell short when John Stones gave the ball away in his own penalty area during the first half of extra time. The gaffe led to Kyle Walker putting the ball into his own net while trying to deny Quincy Promes a shot on goal. Promes put the nail in England's coffin by scoring Holland's third in the second half of extra time.

England manager Gareth Southgate elected to initially rest the Tottenham and Liverpool players who competed in the Champions League final, bringing on Harry Kane and Jordan Henderson after the break with his side leading 1-0 courtesy of a Marcus Rashford penalty.

That lead, however, was wiped out in the 73rd minute when Matthijs de Ligt rose above his marker to bring the Dutch level.

The Netherlands had plenty of chances to put the match out of reach had it not been for numerous squandered opportunities; Memphis Depay failed to find the back of the net despite registering twice as many shots on target as the entire England squad combined.

The Dutch will face Portugal in the final on June 9 at the Estadio do Dragao. England will take on Switzerland in the third-place match that same day.
