Lionel Messi said that he already misses playing for Argentina in a heartfelt message posted on Instagram a day after his final game with the national team.
"Yesterday was my last game and I already miss wearing blue and white," he wrote Wednesday, as translated by ESPN. "I know I'm making the right decision. It was an incredible road filled with joys and also some sorrow, but I'm clear that it was worth every step I took."
On Tuesday, Messi scored his 126th international goal and recorded two assists in a friendly win - dubbed "the last tango" - against Benin at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The 39-year-old, who represents Inter Miami at the club level, praised his family and friends for their support. He also highlighted the impact of Argentina great Diego Maradona.
"I don't want to forget Diego, who put our country where it deserved to be and who ... helped us being over here with us and also from heaven, in every step we took," Messi added.
During an international career that spanned 21 years, Messi led Argentina to two Copa America titles and was pivotal in helping the country win its third World Cup in 2022.
He ended his message by saying: "I am grateful. I love you so much. I will miss you, and I will always thank you for being by our side and by my side."
