Lionel Messi and Inter Miami are close to finalizing a multi-year contract extension to keep the Argentine megastar at the club, sources told ESPN's Lizzy Becherano and Moises Llorens.

"A few details" need to be ironed out before the agreement is sealed, but the deal is expected to be completed soon, according to Becherano and Llorens.

After Messi and Miami come to terms, Major League Soccer must review the contract and provide final approval.

Messi's current deal is slated to expire after this season.

The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner joined Inter Miami in July 2023. He quickly led the club to its first trophy, spearheading a famous Leagues Cup triumph just weeks after his arrival. He went on to power the Herons to the 2024 Supporters' Shield and a new MLS record for points in a season.

Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas has been adamant that he'll do whatever it takes to retain the 38-year-old and have the World Cup winner on the pitch when the club christens its new stadium, Miami Freedom Park, in 2026.

Messi, the reigning MLS MVP, has played 36 games in 2025 across all competitions for the South Florida outfit, racking up a team-leading 28 goals to go along with 14 assists.

Inter Miami currently sit sixth in the Eastern Conference going into the final weeks of the regular season.
