Christian Eriksen's Inter Milan tenure could be over.

The Dane is prohibited from playing in Italy this season after he suffered cardiac arrest during a Euro 2020 match with Denmark during the summer, Inter announced Thursday, according to Reuters.

Eriksen had an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) inserted inside his body after the incident. The Italian federation said in August that Eriksen cannot play in Italy unless the heart-monitoring device is removed.

"With reference to the registration rights of the player Eriksen, it should be noted that following a serious injury which occurred during the European Championship in June 2021, the player has been temporarily inhibited by the Italian medical authority from sporting activity in the current season," Inter said in a statement.

Inter added that they are willing to part with Eriksen in order for him to possibly continue his career abroad.

"Although the current conditions of the player don't meet the requirements of achieving sporting fitness in Italy, the same could instead be achieved in other countries where the player could resume competitive activity," the Serie A club said.

It's unclear which other countries would permit Eriksen to play with the ICD device.

Eriksen joined Inter from Tottenham Hotspur in 2020 and helped the club win its first Serie A title in more than a decade last season.
