U.S. narrows gap at Presidents Cup with early Sunday charge

A United States comeback is fully underway in the Sunday singles session at the Presidents Cup.

Trailing 10.5-7.5 entering the final day of action at Medinah, the Americans front-loaded their lineup to get some early points on the board.

That worked immediately as Cameron Young, Justin Thomas, and Scottie Scheffler all delivered early wins. The only blemish for the U.S. in the opening four matches was Tom Kim defeating Wyndham Clark to put the International team within four points of a stunning Presidents Cup victory.

Sungjae Im lowered that number to just three points with a dominant win over Sam Burns, but the Americans hold the edge in almost all the remaining matches on the course.

Match 1: Cameron Young (USA) wins 3&2 over Ryo Hisatsune (INT)

Young once again served as the United States' tone-setter, following up his opening-match singles win at last year's Ryder Cup with another Sunday. The World No. 3 actually started slowly against Hisatsune, falling 2-down through four, but his class showed through on the back nine. Young won three holes in a row (11-13) to turn a tied contest into a runaway. He saved his best for last, curling home a 31-footer for birdie on 16 to end it.

Match 2: Tom Kim (INT) wins 3&2 over Wyndham Clark (USA)

Kim's superstar turn at the Presidents Cup continued for another event as the South Korean took out Clark in the second match of the day. Both players had stretches of brilliant golf, but Kim maintained his run on the back nine to pull away with four birdies in that section of the course. He finishes the week with a sparkling 4-1 record after teaming with Si Woo Kim during all four team sessions in what proved to be the best duo at the event.

Match 3: Justin Thomas (USA) wins 5&3 over Corey Conners (INT)

This one was over before the spectators could open a second beer. Thomas played well throughout the opening stretch, but Conners handed him a number of holes as a result of errant shots and a horrific putting display. The Canadian was 5-down through six holes and simply couldn't do anything to mount a comeback. Thomas' 5&3 win is his first singles victory in his Presidents Cup career.

Match 4: Scottie Scheffler (USA) vs. Nico Echavarria (INT)

The Scheffler-Echavarria match was expected to be lopsided, and it ended up being exactly that. The World No. 1 made five birdies in his first 10 holes to remove any hope of a David-versus-Goliath upset. Scheffler also provided an incredible moment of sportsmanship during the contest, conceding a long par putt to Echavarria on the back nine after a fan yelled during the Colombian's backswing on the tee. Scheffler finishes the week 3-1-0, improving his overall Presidents Cup record to 6-6-1.

Match 5: Sungjae Im (INT) wins 3&1 over Sam Burns (USA)

The fact that this matchup even made it to the 17th hole was a surprise given the gap in play between Im and Burns. The South Korean was one of the top players across all of Sunday's matches, pouring in seven birdies. Meanwhile, Burns, who's provided a number of strong moments throughout the week, was clearly gassed from playing all five sessions. He made two double-bogeys on the day and finished as the worst American in strokes gained.
