Royal Birkdale is once again the site of a record-setting round in the Open Championship.

Lucas Herbert's sizzling second round of 8-under 62 tied the men's major championship scoring record nine years after Branden Grace torched Birkdale to become the first to reach that mark.

At the time, Herbert became the fifth man to post a 62 in a major, joining Grace, Rickie Fowler, Xander Schauffele, and Shane Lowry. That lasted all of about 20 minutes after Sam Burns holed out from the bunker on the 18th to steal some thunder from Herbert and post a 62 of his own.

Despite his outstanding play Friday, Herbert will be disappointed not to have broken the record with a 61. He came to the 18th needing only a par to post that number, but a wayward drive left him unable to reach the green in regulation.

Though Herbert played a solid third shot to leave himself five feet for history, he pulled his putt left and had to settle for a share of the record.

"I'm absolutely disappointed, and at the same time, so proud of today," Herbert said. "Very, very proud to put my name on that list of guys who have shot 62 in a major championship. So, it's kind of holding two emotions there at the same time. It's a tricky one, and I'm sure once the dust settles, I'll be able to sort of decompress it a little bit. Right now, I've sort of got both going on, and it's a pretty good problem to have too, to be disappointed you shot 62."

Herbert's incredible performance included a front-nine 28, matching the all-time nine-hole scoring record in the Open Championship.

The Australian also soared up the leaderboard from even to 8-under and now holds a two-stroke edge on Jackson Suber.

While Herbert played well on LIV Golf this season, his major resume makes Friday's performance a stunner. He's never finished inside the top 10 of a major championship, with only two top-30 showings in 17 starts.
