McIlroy: 'Don't know' what DeChambeau expected at Masters
Rory McIlroy defended his decision not to talk to Bryson DeChambeau during the final round of the Masters ahead of the PGA Championship on Wednesday.
"I don't know what he was expecting," McIlroy said. "Like, we're trying to win the Masters. I'm not going to try to be his best mate out there. Look, everyone approaches the game different ways. I was focused on myself and what I needed to do, and that's really all that it was. It wasn't anything against him, I felt that's what I needed to do to get the best out of myself that day."
DeChambeau claimed McIlroy "didn't talk to me once all day" and that "he wouldn't talk to me" during the final round at the Masters in April, per GOLF.com.
McIlroy dramatically completed the career grand slam at the Masters in a playoff against Justin Rose. DeChambeau briefly took the lead early in the final round, but ultimately carded a 3-over 75 and finished in a tie for fifth.
DeChambeau beat McIlroy at the 2024 U.S. Open after Rory bogeyed three of the last four holes.
The LIV star is hoping for another showdown with McIlroy on Sunday at Quail Hollow.
"I'm certainly gonna give it my all, and I know Rory is," DeChambeau told Sky Sports Golf. "Hopefully, we can have another go at it again, like the Masters."
