Report: WGC-Match Play spot to be replaced in 2024

The WGC-Match Play event regularly held in Austin, Texas, in the spring is expected to be replaced in the 2024 PGA TOUR schedule, according to Golfweek's Adam Schupak.

The tournament is typically played in mid-to-late March at Austin Country Club but will most likely be replaced with the Houston Open next year as the TOUR continues to rearrange the schedule ahead of 2024, Schupak adds.

The Match Play has been part of the TOUR schedule since 1999, along with three other World Golf Championships. The Match Play is the only of those four still on the current 2022-23 schedule.

A TOUR spokesman told Schupak that discussions about the WGC-Match Play tournament past this season are "ongoing."

The tournament has been regularly played just a few weeks before the Masters, the season's first major. Last year, it played host to Scottie Scheffler's third career TOUR win where he clinched his first World No. 1 ranking.

The Houston Open, meanwhile, has already been played this season as it currently holds a spot at the beginning of 2022-23 in November. It changed from a spring tournament to a fall event ahead of the 2019-2020 campaign.

The TOUR announced in June 2022 that it would be returning to a calendar-year format for 2024.
