LIV Golf reveals Team Championship format

We finally know the Team Championship format for LIV Golf's season finale - just a month before it begins.

The Saudi-backed league announced its Team Championship will feature three rounds - two days of match play and a final day of stroke play - to decide the winning group.

The event - which carries a $50-million purse - will be a three-day tournament beginning Oct. 28, and all 12 teams qualify. On the first day, only teams seeded 5-12 will participate in the quarterfinals as seeds 1-4 will get a bye.

From there, the higher-ranked teams among seeds 5-12 will choose what team to go up against in match play. Each team will have two singles matches against its opponents, and the third match will be a foursomes, alternate-shot match.

All 32 players will start at the same time, keeping with LIV's tradition of shotgun starts, and there will be no ties or half points as there are in the TOUR's Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup.

The teams that earn two of the available three points over their opponents on Friday's first day will advance to Saturday's semifinals. The same format - including the choosing of opponents - will apply, but the teams ranked 1-4 will play against the four teams that advanced the day prior.

On the final day, the four semifinal winners will play in a traditional twosomes, stroke-play format with team captains playing each other. The team with the lowest combined score between all four players will be crowned champions.

LIV Golf has two more events - Bangkok and Jeddah - before it heads to Blue Monster at Trump National Doral Miami on Oct. 28-30 to crown the team winner of its inaugural season.
