On Sunday, Will Zalatoris came up one stroke short at the U.S. Open for the third runner-up major finish of his career.

"This one hurts in particular pretty hard, but it's motivating," Zalatoris said, according to the TOUR. "I've got to keep doing what I'm doing. I know I'm going to get one sooner or later."

The 25-year-old had a chance for birdie at the par-4 18th hole to tie Fitzpatrick at 6-under, but his putt narrowly missed.

Zalatoris finished one shot back of Hideki Matsuyama at the Masters Tournament in April 2021. Just last month at the PGA Championship at Southern Hills, Zalatoris lost in a three-hole aggregate playoff to Justin Thomas.

On Sunday, Fitzpatrick's shot at the 18th hole had landed in the bunker. From there, the Englishman pulled off a difficult shot to land his ball safely on the green, all but sealing the deal for the win.

"Matt's shot on 18 is going to be shown probably for the rest of U.S. Open history," Zalatoris said, according to Golf Channel's Brentley Romine.

Zalatoris was not only searching for a major win at the U.S. Open on Sunday, but a first win on TOUR as well.

Zalatoris' next shot at winning a major will come next month at The Open Championship from July 14-17 at St. Andrews.
