Henrik Stenson will serve as Europe's Ryder Cup captain in 2023, the tournament announced Tuesday.
"I am absolutely thrilled and delighted to be the European Ryder Cup captain - it is a huge honor and I was humbled to get the call confirming the news," Stenson said. "I would like to thank the selection panel for believing in me and will say to them, and every European golf fan, that I will do everything in my power and leave no stone unturned in the quest to get the Ryder Cup back in European hands."
Stenson's appeared in five Ryder Cups as a player, compiling an overall record of 10-7-2. He was vice captain in September's event at Whistling Straits, and is now the first Swede to be European captain.
The 45-year-old has won 17 events worldwide, most famously The 145th Open Championship in 2016.
The United States tabbed Zach Johnson as captain for its squad last month.
Next year's Ryder Cup runs Sept. 25-Oct. 1 at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome.
