Simpson, Finau, Rose headline notables to miss cut at Torrey Pines

The U.S. Open routinely presents golf's toughest challenge of the year, and the 2021 edition has been no exception through two rounds.

While there's plenty of star power on the leaderboard for the weekend, several big names are heading home early after missing the 5-over-par cut Friday at Torrey Pines.

Former U.S. Open champions Justin Rose and Webb Simpson both struggled mightily on the challenging California layout, finishing at 13-over and 10-over, respectively. Rose finished top 10 in each of the season's first two majors but couldn't maintain that momentum this week, while Simpson's made-cut streak at major tournaments - the longest active such streak - ended at 16.

Tony Finau has had great success at Torrey Pines during the Farmers Insurance Open, but he couldn't bring that to the same course for the U.S. Open. The world No. 14 made just two birdies over 36 holes and finished at 9-over.

World No. 13 Viktor Hovland is also headed home early, but he won't earn a missed cut on the card after withdrawing with an eye injury. The Norwegian star got sand in his left eye while warming up for Friday's second round and pulled out after struggling through his first few holes.
