Keith Mitchell signed for a 5-under 66 in Round 3 of the Wells Fargo Championship to carry a two-shot edge over Rory McIlroy and Gary Woodland into Sunday.

Mitchell went bogey-free around a tough Quail Hollow Club to secure the 54-hole lead. He gained over three strokes off the tee in Round 3 to lead the field in driving and gained roughly 1.5 on the greens.

The 29-year-old Tennessee native will look to hang on for a second career PGA TOUR title. He claimed his first at the Honda Classic in 2019.

However, Mitchell will need to fend off a pair of major champions in hot pursuit if he's going to return to the winner's circle.

McIlroy, who will play in Sunday's final pairing, shot 68 despite a costly double-bogey on No. 12. At one point, the Northern Irishman held a two-shot advantage.

Woodland, meanwhile, co-led after 36-holes but dropped into a tie for second with his 1-under 70.

Here's how the top of the leaderboard stands with 18 holes remaining:

Place Player To Par R3 Score
1 Keith Mitchell -9 66
T2 Rory McIlroy -7 68
T2 Gary Woodland -7 70
4 Luke List -6 68
T5 Satoshi Kodaira -5 68
T5 Scott Stallings -5 70
