Mickelson, Reed, Cantlay among notables to miss cut at The Open

Although 77 players made the cut at the Open Championship, Phil Mickelson, Patrick Reed, Patrick Cantlay, and Tyrrell Hatton are among the big names who won't see the weekend.

Mickelson failed to recapture the magic that led him to an improbable PGA Championship in May, opening with a 10-over 80 on Thursday. While he improved with a 2-over 72 in Round 2, Mickelson beat just four players in the 156-man field. It's his third missed cut in four starts at The Open since his epic 2016 duel with Henrik Stenson.

Reed struggled with rounds of 72 and 71 despite a seemingly ideal skill set for the Royal St. George's. He missed the 1-over cut by two strokes. It's the World No. 9's first missed cut in a major since the 2019 PGA Championship.

Cantlay matched Reed at 3-over. It's the 29-year-old's second missed cut in a major this season.

Hatton may have had the loudest missed cut in the field, as the Englishman flipped off a spectator and snapped a club over his knee in two separate incidents Friday. Despite the dramatics, Hatton still had a chance to make the cut, but he bogeyed the 17th to drop one shot off the pace.
