McIlroy falls to worst world ranking since 2009

Rory McIlroy is ranked No. 13 in the latest Official World Golf Ranking, marking his worst position since 2009, according to CBS' Rick Gehman.

His 4,167-day stretch ranking inside the top 12 was snapped following a missed cut at the Masters. It was only the second time in 13 Masters appearances the Northern Irishman failed to make the weekend.

McIlroy's descent down the world ranking began when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. At the time of the PGA TOUR's shutdown, he was ranked No. 1 in the world and coming off seven straight top-five finishes worldwide.

Since then, he has zero wins and only two top-five results in 22 events played.

The 31-year-old attributed some of his recent struggles to swing changes he made in an attempt to gain more swing speed after watching Bryson DeChambeau dismantle Winged Foot en route to a U.S. Open title.

McIlroy's last PGA TOUR victory came in June 2019 at the RBC Canadian Open.
