Phone call from wife helped Homa rebound after missing short putt

After Max Homa missed a three-foot putt that would have won him the Genesis Invitational on Sunday, his wife called to remind him of some advice she'd given him before.

"My wife this morning told me, she gives me advice and she said ... 'forgive quickly,'" a choked-up Homa said after winning a playoff against Tony Finau, according to TeeScripts. "So when I missed the putt, she called me and she said, 'forgive quickly,' forgive myself."

The call came before the extra holes began, and Homa's ability to forgive himself was tested immediately. He needed to pull off a special shot to keep his chances alive after his ball settled inches away from the base of a tree on the first playoff hole.

"I'm going to get some bad breaks, got one on 10, made the most of it," Homa said. "Hit a great shot on 14 and kind of forced Tony's hand a little bit with the bunker shot."

He continued: "I felt like if I kept wearing people down today, a lot of pars, some birdies, I could get it done. It's a lot of emotions; this place means a lot to me."

Homa is a native of Los Angeles and attended the Genesis Invitational many times growing up.
