Nick Taylor posted an 8-under 62 in the second round of the Sony Open to build a two-shot lead going into the weekend.

It took a while for the Canadian to get going on Friday at Waialae Country Club, as he sat at 1-over through five holes. But his round picked up with back-to-back birdies and an eagle before he made the turn. Taylor added five birdies on his closing nine to reach 12-under for the event.

He was also the beneficiary of some luck on his final hole. Taylor's drive ended up next to the fence that separates the hole from the driving range. But since he had room to potentially hit the ball left-handed, he was granted free relief from the temporary immovable obstruction and went on to birdie the par 5.

Five players share second place, including pre-tournament favorite Webb Simpson and 2013 Sony Open champion Russell Henley.

Here's how the top of the crowded leaderboard stands after Round 2:

Place Player To Par R2 Score
1 Nick Taylor -12 62
T2 Stewart Cink -10 63
T2 Webb Simpson -10 65
T2 Russell Henley -10 64
T2 Vaughn Taylor -10 66
T2 Chris Kirk -10 65

Collin Morikawa, Hideki Matsuyama, Marc Leishman, and first-round leader Joaquin Niemann are all at 9-under with four others.

There are 34 players within five shots of Taylor's lead with 36 holes remaining in Honolulu.
