Justin Thomas fired his second 7-under 65 of the week to grab the Zozo Championship lead after Round 2 from Sherwood Country Club.

The 13-time PGA Tour winner got off to a hot start Friday with five birdies in his first seven holes but cooled off on his second nine. Thomas parred his final six holes to remain bogey-free on the day.

"I played well," Thomas said afterward. "I'm not very pleased with the finish. The last six holes I would have liked to at least have got something. Definitely having a 5-iron and a 5-wood out of the fairway into two par 5s and making two pars is not good."

This is the third time in Thomas' career he's posted two rounds of 65 or better to open a tournament. He went on to win the two previous occasions, according to 15th Club's Justin Ray.

Here's how the top of the leaderboard sits through 36 holes:

Place Player To Par R2 Score
T1 Justin Thomas -14 65
T2 Dylan Frittelli -13 65
T2 Lanto Griffin -13 65
T4 Patrick Cantlay -12 65
T4 Scottie Scheffler -12 65
T6 Abraham Ancer -11 66
T6 Harris English -11 67
T6 Bubba Watson -11 63
T6 Tyrrell Hatton -11 68
T6 Patrick Reed -11 63
T6 Tony Finau -11 64
T6 Kevin Kisner -11 67
T6 Richy Werenski -11 61

Richy Werenski broke Tiger Woods' course record at Sherwood with an 11-under 61, which included a bogey.

Speaking of Tiger, he improved on his first round by 10 shots, posting a 66 on Day 2. Still, Woods sits 12 strokes back of Thomas heading into the weekend.

Sherwood failed to present a tough test for the second straight day. The short par-72 course with five par 5s yielded a 67.87 scoring average Friday.

"It's not very difficult," Thomas added. "It's short and the greens are soft right now. ... With some of the pins that they've had and definitely just the softer conditions, that's good scoring conditions for us."

Round 3 gets underway Saturday at 12:58 a.m. ET.
