Swafford hangs on to win Corales Puntacana Championship
Hudson Swafford hung on to win the Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship by shooting a final-round 69 on Sunday.
The 33-year-old entered the day trailing Adam Long by two but posted 31 on the front nine to take control of the tournament. His advantage grew to four shots with only six holes remaining, but he dropped into a three-way share of the lead following a double-bogey on 13 and another bogey two holes later.
However, Swafford hit a beautiful tee shot on the par-3 17th to set up a birdie look, which he converted to regain the outright lead. A shaky two-putt par on the final hole sealed a one-shot victory for Swafford's second PGA Tour title.
"Man, it's amazing," said Swafford, who's battled a back injury in recent years. "Words can't really describe it. (The) last two years have been tough. Not family-wise, though. Me and my wife had our first son, life's great and golf was really hard, and to do this, it's fun. This is why I get up and grind."
Swafford's last victory was at the 2017 CareerBuilder Challenge.
Here's how the top of the leaderboard finished:
Place | Player | To Par | R4 Score |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Hudson Swafford | -18 | 69 |
2 | Tyler McCumber | -17 | 66 |
3 | Mackenzie Hughes | -16 | 70 |
4 | Nate Lashley | -15 | 69 |
5 | Adam Long | -14 | 75 |
McCumber mounted a late push with four birdies on his back nine, including one on 18 for the clubhouse lead at 17-under, concluding his best finish on the PGA Tour.
Hughes continued his career year with his third top-three result of 2020. He was a runner-up in Punta Cana last season.
The PGA Tour heads to Jackson, Mississippi, next week for the Sanderson Farms Championship.
