Patrick Reed is atop of the U.S. Open leaderboard at 3-under par after a grueling Friday at Winged Foot Golf Club.

The 2018 Masters champion birdied his final hole for an even-par 70 on a course that presented a true U.S. Open test after playing much easier in Round 1.

"Today really felt like a U.S. Open; I can tell you that," Xander Schauffele, who is in a share of seventh, said following his round.

The second-round scoring average was 2.62 strokes tougher than the opening round, which is the largest jump in scoring average between a first and second round in U.S. Open history, according to the 15th Club's Justin Ray. Additionally, the total number of players under par fell from 21 following Round 1 to only six heading into the weekend.

Bryson DeChambeau posted 68 during Day 2's morning wave to sit alone in second. He eagled his final hole and is the only player in the field to shoot back-to-back rounds in the 60s.

DeChambeau, Hideki Matsuyama, and Bubba Watson were the only three players to shoot under par on Friday.

Here's how the top of the leaderboard stands going into the weekend:

Place Player To Par R2 Score
1 Patrick Reed -4 70
2 Bryson DeChambeau -3 68
T3 Rafa Cabrera Bello -2 70
T3 Harris English -2 70
T3 Justin Thomas -2 73
6 Jason Kokrak -1 71

First-round leader Justin Thomas posted 73 to drop into a share for third. At one point, the 27-year-old was 5-over for his round, but two birdies on his second nine lifted him within two of the lead.

Matsuyama and Schauffele are joined by Matthew Wolff, Thomas Pieters, and Brendon Todd in the group currently tied for seventh at even par.

Rory McIlroy shot 6-over to drop from two off the lead to seven shots back.

Tiger Woods, Collin Morikawa, and Phil Mickelson headline the list of notables who failed to make the 6-over cutline.

Round 3 from Winged Foot begins at 8:55 a.m. ET with the final pairing of DeChambeau and Reed teeing off at 2:25 p.m.
