Scheffler becomes 11th player to shoot 59 on PGA Tour

Scottie Scheffler fired a 12-under 59 on Friday at The Northern Trust to become the 11th player in PGA Tour history to break golf's magic number.

Scheffler made 12 birdies in his bogey-free performance during Round 2 at TPC Boston. He moved up 71 spots on the leaderboard to hold a share of the clubhouse lead at 13-under par.

Even though he was 8-under through 12 holes, it took a while for the potential of a sub-60 round to sink in.

"I actually missed a putt today on 13 for birdie, and it kind of clicked," Scheffler said afterward. "I was like, 'oh, man, that would have been a nice one to go in' because I was playing really good at that point.

"Kind of clicked like, 'hey, you know, I have a chance to do something pretty cool today' and got rolling again pretty quick on 14, 15, 16, and made a great birdie on 18, as well."

The former Texas Longhorn is now the second-youngest golfer to ever post a 59 behind Justin Thomas, who shot his sub-60 round at the 2017 Sony Open at the age of 23.

Scheffler also revealed his 59 on Friday was the second in his lifetime. He recently posted a sub-60 round during quarantine while the PGA Tour was in the middle of a three-month break.

While the 24-year-old is the 11th player to break 60, his score is the 12th-ever sub-60 round on the PGA Tour. Jim Furyk has shot in the 50s twice.

Six of the 12 sub-60 rounds in PGA Tour history have come since 2016. The last was from Kevin Chappell at the 2019 Military Tribute at the Greenbrier.
