Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson needed a playoff to complete their comeback and defeat Rickie Fowler and Matthew Wolff in the TaylorMade Driving Relief skins game on Sunday.
The playoff was decided by a closest-to-the-pin competition worth $1.1 million, which took place on the 17th hole at Seminole Golf Club in Florida.
After Wolff put it close, McIlroy stepped up and hit a brilliant shot even closer to end the competition in style. The teams had tied the final six holes to create the giant skin that decided the event in the playoff.
McIlroy and Johnson finished with a total of $1.85 million - which will be donated to the American Nurses Foundation - while Fowler and Wolff finished with $1.15 million. All of the money earned will be donated toward COVID-19 relief efforts.
Despite the victory, it was tough sledding for the team comprised of two top-five players in the world. McIlroy and Johnson won the first three skins to grab an early lead but failed to add to their total from the sixth hole on.
Fowler carried his partner with seven birdies and was by far the best performer of the foursome. He and Wolff owned a $400,000 lead going into the final hole.
Meanwhile, Wolff won both long-drive competitions, on Nos. 2 and 14, which helped raise an additional $450,000 for the CDC Foundation.
