DeChambeau fires 2nd-round 63, grabs narrow lead in Mexico
Bryson DeChambeau torched Club de Golf Chapultepec with an 8-under 63 on Friday to lead the WGC-Mexico Championship by one shot through two rounds.
After playing his first eight holes at 1-under, the 26-year-old stepped on the gas with seven birdies over the remainder of his round. He seemingly couldn't miss a putt during Round 2, gaining over 4.5 strokes on the greens.
DeChambeau now holds a narrow edge over Patrick Reed and Erik van Rooyen, who are both 10-under after 36 holes. Reed matched DeChambeau's 63 while van Rooyen posted the lowest score of the day with a 9-under 62 on his 30th birthday.
Here's how the stacked leaderboard stands after Round 2:
| Place | Player | To Par | R2 Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Bryson DeChambeau | -11 | 63 |
| T2 | Erik van Rooyen | -10 | 62 |
| T2 | Patrick Reed | -10 | 63 |
| T4 | Hideki Matsuyama | -9 | 64 |
| T4 | Justin Thomas | -9 | 66 |
| 6 | Rory McIlroy | -8 | 69 |
First-round leader Rory McIlroy stalled Friday. His first birdie of the day came on No. 12, and he played his first 15 holes at level par. McIlroy eventually rallied to shoot 2-under but finished the round three shots off the pace.
Despite considerably easier scoring conditions in Round 2 compared to opening day, defending champion Dustin Johnson still struggled. He shot even par to remain at 5-over for the tournament and now sits tied for 60th.
