Collin Morikawa saw his first-round lead slip away after shooting an even-par 70 during Friday's second round of the Sony Open. He heads into the weekend trailing Brendan Steele and Cameron Davis by one.

The 22-year-old wasn't as sharp as his opening-round 65 in Honolulu, Hawaii. However, he managed to remain in the heat of the race with back-to-back birdies to close Day 2.

He's looking for his second title in only his 15th PGA Tour start.

Steele and Davis fired matching 4-under 66s to share the lead with 36 holes left to play. They top a crowded leaderboard as 23 players are within three shots of their 6-under mark.

Here's how the top of the leaderboard stands after Round 2:

Place Player To Par R2 Score
T1 Brendan Steele -6 66
T1 Cameron Davis -6 66
T3 Cameron Smith -5 65
T3 Keegan Bradley -5 66
T3 Russell Knox -5 65
T3 Ryan Palmer -5 68
T3 Sam Ryder -5 68
T3 Bo Hoag -5 65
T3 Collin Morikawa -5 70
T3 Rory Sabbatini -5 67

Due to wind on Oahu creating difficult scoring conditions, the field strength at the Sony Open took a drastic hit with its 1-over cutline. Justin Thomas (3-over), Patrick Reed (3-over), and Matt Kuchar (2-over) failed to advance to the weekend.
