Woods, Thomas lead late USA charge to split Day 2 at Presidents Cup

Tiger Woods and Justin Thomas led a late charge as the American team battled back to split Day 2 with the Internationals at the Presidents Cup.

The Internationals hold a 6.5-3.5 advantage after the second session at Royal Melbourne. However, momentum has swung in the event as the United States flipped multiple matches late in the day.

Shortly after Louis Oosthuizen and Adam Scott clinched the first point on Friday, the Internationals were leading in every match on the course. It was looking like a runaway until the Americans turned it on.

Patrick Cantlay nailed a clutch putt on No. 18 to put the first United States point on the board. Then, Justin Thomas and Tiger Woods teamed up for an electrifying birdie on 18 to cut further into the Internationals' advantage.

Despite tying their match, Rickie Fowler and Gary Woodland erased a 2-down deficit with three holes remaining to pick up a crucial half-point.

Here's how the foursome matches finished:

Patrick Reed and Webb Simpson fell to 0-2 after a disappointing loss to Abraham Ancer and Marc Leishman. At one point, Reed mocked his bunker scandal by mimicking the use of a shovel after making a putt to remain 2-down in the match.

The teams will play two sessions on Day 3 consisting of four matches each, starting with four-ball (best ball) before moving to foursomes (alternate shot).

The third session begins Friday at 3:00 p.m. ET.
