Golfers teeing it up at the Alfred Dunhill Championship this week in South Africa will be a part of the sport's fashion history: They'll be allowed to wear shorts in a men's professional tournament for the first time.

The joint event between the European Tour and Sunshine Tour (South Africa's golf circuit) made the announcement on Wednesday with temperatures expected to push 100F in the northeast region of South Africa.

Ernie Els and Thomas Bjorn were thrilled.

Shorts have been allowed during practice rounds on the European Tour since 2016, and the PGA Tour adopted the less-formal attire for its warm-up rounds in 2019.

Somewhere, Phil Mickelson is smiling.
