Mickelson: 'Much better options' than me for U.S. Presidents Cup team

Phil Mickelson admits that his customary spot on the U.S. Presidents Cup team is in jeopardy, and he agrees that it should be.

"There are much better options of players that have played consistently at a high level that deserve to be on the team," Mickelson said Wednesday in his pre-tournament press conference for the CJ Cup, according to ESPN's Bob Harig.

"I'm not asking for one (an at-large pick). I don't expect one. I think there are a lot of better options for the U.S. side."

Since winning the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February, Mickelson has missed the cut in eight of his 18 starts and has only finished in the top 35 once.

The veteran golfer has represented his country in 24 consecutive team competitions, dating all the way back to the 1994 Presidents Cup. If U.S. team captain Tiger Woods doesn't use one of his four at-large selections to add him to the squad, Mickelson's streak will end.

"I am starting to play much better golf, and I'm excited about the upcoming season," Mickelson added. "I'm excited about making the Ryder Cup team next year, and I plan on doing that."

The 49-year-old kicks off the first round of the CJ Cup in South Korea on Wednesday night. Woods will announce his captain's selections the week of Nov. 4.
