Scott Piercy got off to a blistering start at the inaugural 3M Open on Thursday, firing a 9-under 62 in Round 1 to lead the tournament by two shots.
The 40-year-old carded six back-nine birdies at TPC Twin Cities to surge past early leaders Hideki Matsuyama and Adam Hadwin, securing his two-stroke edge with a bogey-free round.
Matsuyama's lone bogey of the day came on his final hole, dropping him back to 7-under. Hadwin later joined him after birdieing four of his final six holes.

Bryson DeChambeau and Tony Finau sit at 5-under, four behind the leader Piercy. Brooks Koepka also put himself in contention with a 4-under 67 on Day 1.
Meanwhile, a triple-bogey on his ninth hole derailed Phil Mickelson's day. He ended at 3-over and well outside the top 125.
Round 2 begins at 7:50 a.m. ET on Friday.
