Spieth records career-best putting performance in Round 1 at Colonial

Jordan Spieth fired a 5-under 65 in Round 1 of the Charles Schwab Challenge on Thursday thanks to the best putting performance of his career.

"I don't struggle reading the greens at Colonial," Spieth said Wednesday.

He wasn't lying.

Spieth gained slightly under 5.5 strokes with his flatstick, beating his previous personal best of 5.16 from Round 2 of the 2019 Players Championship.

The 25-year-old made putts of 30, 34, and 46 feet on Thursday. The shortest putt he missed was 17 feet, 5 inches.

Two weeks ago at the AT&T Byron Nelson, Spieth recorded a round in which he gained 4.5 strokes putting. His confidence with the putter carried into the PGA Championship, during which he led the field by gaining 10.6 strokes on the green for the week en route to a T-3 finish.

Spieth sits one shot behind the leader, Tony Finau.
