John Daly's request to use a cart at the upcoming Open Championship in July is still being decided upon by the R&A.

"We have received a request from John Daly for permission to use a buggy at The Open and it is currently under consideration," the R&A said, according to Golf.com's Josh Berhow.

If allowed, Daly would become the first-ever player to use a cart in the history of the Open Championship.

The 53-year-old rode a cart during his missed cut at the PGA Championship last week, citing osteoarthritis in his right knee as the reason for needing to use one. He rides when playing in Champions Tour events as well.

"Doctors tell me I’m too young to get a knee surgery, get it replaced," Daly said at Bethpage Black, according to Berhow. "I enjoy playing. I'm still competitive, and I think getting to play hopefully the British in a cart. ... Past champions, I think if we can play, no matter what it takes, I think we should."

Daly won the 1995 Open Championship at St. Andrews and has an exemption to play in the tournament until the age of 60.
