PGA Tour caddies criticize Kuchar: 'It's a real bad look'
Matt Kuchar is not receiving any support from several anonymous PGA Tour caddies, who gave their opinions on the payment he made to fill-in David Ortiz after winning the Mayakoba Golf Classic.
“It’s a real bad look,” said one caddie who's carried the bag for multiple major winners, according to Golf.com's Adam Schupak. “This is going to stick to him.”
Kuchar defended paying Ortiz - a full-time caddie at El Camaleon Golf Club in Mexico - $5,000 after winning nearly $1.3 million at the tournament in November, saying, "those were the terms."
Ortiz admitted he never expected to be paid like a regular caddie, but believed his contribution was worth $50,000, money he was going to use to open a laundromat, according to Golf.com's Michael Bamberger.
“He had the chance to change a guy’s life and he just doesn’t get it," a former caddie of a Hall of Famer added.
John Wood, Kuchar's regular caddie who was unable to man the bag in Mexico, declined to comment, citing: "whatever I say, I can't win."
No Tour pros have come to Kuchar's defense publicly as of yet, and another caddie expects it to remain that way.
“Has any player come to his defense?” he said. “No, and I guarantee you if you surveyed the pros no one would have his back.”
