Rickie Fowler stood in the 11th fairway with a comfortable five-shot lead at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

And then it all fell apart.

His third shot on the par 4 rolled off the green and somehow avoided the greenside bunker before dropping into the water.

Then, after taking his drop and surveying his next shot, Fowler's ball trickled back into the hazard, which under the rules of golf, is a one-shot penalty.

Now lying five, Fowler faced a tough pitch back onto the green, but he managed to put it to 16 feet and rolled in his putt for a triple-bogey seven.

He followed that with another bogey on the par-3 12th to drop into a tie for the lead with Branden Grace, who made a birdie to get to 15-under while things unraveled for Fowler on No. 11.
