U.S captain Jim Furyk spoke publicly about his Ryder Cup decisions for the first time since Patrick Reed criticized them following the team's loss to Europe.

Reed made headlines for his heated comments, in which he claimed it wasn't smart for someone with his Ryder Cup resume to be sat twice. He added that he should have been playing with Jordan Spieth - who rolled with childhood friend Justin Thomas - instead of Tiger Woods.

Reed took the decision personally, but Furyk said the team knew their playing partners well before arriving in Paris.

"All four players knew who they had would be playing with weeks in advance," Furyk said, per Josh Berhow of Golf.com. "In fact I had a messaging with Patrick a week out from the Ryder Cup. They knew they were going out that first session in four ball, and I think that was a great session for them, and (we talked about) when Patrick felt they should go out in the order one through four."

Reed and Woods were twice on the losing end against European super-duo Tommy Fleetwood and Francesco Molinari, while Spieth and Thomas went 3-1 as the Americans dropped the tournament 17.5 to 10.5.
